Blue Water Tile (PSP v.6)

This tutorial is the introduction to using PSP version 6 and the various effects to create a Blue Water Tile. The purpose of this tutorial is to provide a simple tile and image creation which allows one to experiment with various features of PSP and become familiar with how they alter a basic image. Thus, in addition to creating the tile, take time to explore various functions recommended.

I. OVERVIEW

  • PSP Features Illustrated

    1. On the Background Layer use COLORS/COLORIZE to alter the basic color of the completed image.
    2. Create a New Duplicate Layer and explore the different Effects. Turn off Layer 2 for this exploration.
    3. With each Effect tried, use the Layer Mode Options to see how they alter the image.
    4. Explore other Inner Bevel Presets.
    5. Explore different values in an Inner Bevel Preset image.

II. THE BASIC TEMPLATE TILEClick to see LAYER PALETTE Menu

  1. Set Foreground to cyan, Background to blue.
  2. CREATE a NEW Tile 300 x 300 Pixels with the Background Color.
  3. PROMOTE the Background to a Layer by right clicking the mouse on the highlighted layer in the Layer Palette.
  4. Click on PROPERTIES and Label layer BACKGROUND.
  5. Create a NEW Layer by clicking on the Layers Icon at the top left of the Layers Palette Icon Bar.
  6. Click on PROPERTIES and Label Layer FILL.
  7. Click on the TOOL PALETTE 'FLOOD FILL' Tool.Click to see TOOLS PALETTE and OPTIONS Window
  8. Select TOOLS OPTIONS .
    TOOLS OPTION values:
    FILL STYLE: Solid Color
    BLEND MODE: Normal
    PAPER TEXTURE: None
    MATCH MODE: None
    OPACITY: 100
  9. Highlight the BACKGROUND layer, then move the mouse cursor to the image and FILL with the BLUE color by Right Clicking the Mouse.
  10. Create a New Layer by DUPLICATING the FILL Layer.
III. CREATING THE MAHAGONY EFFECTClick to see IMAGE/EFFECTS/SCULPTURE Menu
  1. Use IMAGES/EFFECTS/SCUPLTURE
  2. Select the MAHOGANY Preset
  3. Select in Layer Mode the Option LUMINANCE
IV. CREATION THE FRAMEClick to see IMAGE/EFFECTS/INNER BEVEL Menu
  1. From IMAGES/EFFECTS select INNER BEVEL
  2. Select the Preset PILLOW. However, use the following values.
    Bevel: Middle row, third from the left.
    Width is 31
    Smoothness 15
    Depth 9
    Ambiance 29
    Shininess 31
    Color White
    Angle 315
    Intensity 44
    Elevation 40

VI. SAVING THE IMAGES

  1. Save the Image first as a .PSP file filename of bluewaters.psp
  2. Use WINDOWS/DUPLICATE to create a new copy
  3. Use LAYERS/MERGE all Layers
  4. RESIZE the image to 200 x 200 pixels or less
  5. FILE/EXPORT/JPEG setting the compression to 20% or higher.
VII. COMMENTS & RECOMMENDATIONS
  1. On the background layer in the .PSP file, play around with the COLORS/COLORIZE options to see the effect on the image as you change the colors. Highlight the BACKGROUND layer first and then use COLORS/COLORIZE and change the HUE and SATURATION values. Change the Hue value by 16 to run though the color spectrum. Set the Saturation Value to 128 and try it again to see more subtle colors.
  2. On the Copy Layer, play around with the Layer Mode Values to see how they change the image appearance.

Take time to play around with the various features and options in PSP will acquaint one with multiple ways to create interesting images and effects. This tutorial shows you how to use a simple background tile and create a very nice image.
